What does “yarn over” USUALLY mean in a knitting pattern?
I know it can mean you just switch the yarn to the other knitting needle or you wrap the yarn over the other needle AND slide the yarn over. The pattern I’m using just says yo (yarn over), which one should I assume it means? Thanks!
Yarn over always means you flip the yarn around the right needle in a counter clock-wise direction to the back of the work unless it explicitly tells you to do it the other direction.
If you slide one stitch from the right needle to the left, that is a slipped stitch. It would be very unusual to call for a yarn over followed by a slipped stitch. Usually yarn overs are either followed immediately by a K2TOG or SSK or else preceded by a K2TOG or SSK.

Flipping the yarn forward over the needle after a knit stitch will result in a stitch that is oriented backwards on the needle. If it is then knit normally on the next row, that stitch will come out twisted. Thats why you only go from back to front over the needle when they explicitly tell you to do it that way.
If you always go counter clockwise, from the perspective of looking at the tip of the right needle, and you knit the way a typical American or European knitter does (as opposed to the way a Russian knitter does) then you will never go wrong. It works after a knit and it works after a purl and always orients the stitch correctly to be knit in the next row without twisting.
