What does “Work each side seperately” mean in knitting patterns?

Help!
I am knitting a cardigan from a Rowan Big Wool pattern and am currently doing the back neck and shoulders. The pattern says this:

Next Row (RS): Cast off 4 sts, patt until there are 6sts on right needle and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder.
Work each side of neck seperately.
Cast off 2sts at beg of next row.
Cast off rem 4sts.
With RS facing rejoin yarn to rem sts, cast off centre 11sts patt to end.

How many rows do I “work each side seperately for”? and when do i start the “cast off 2sts at beg next row”?

Please help asap, im working on it now!
Thanks.

If you can, try to do the both sides at the same time.

What i mean, is that I put both sides on the left needle at the same time.

I use the yarn from the outside of the skein and the inside (if you do not have an extra skein of the same dye lot available). I work a row on one side. Then with the other yarn, work a row on the other side. What this does is keep the gauge even.

A problem many knitters, crocheters too, have is completing one side and then later working the other side. Unless you are a well-experienced pro ( no, I am not being redundant) it is easy to change gauge if your mood is different. Being tired, stressed, angry, can cause someone to work tighter without realizing it until it is time to assemble the finished piece!

You can also do this with an extra needle or a circular needle. Next time you purchase supplies on sales, consider this process.
