how can i learn to knit?
it seems like something someone should teach you one-on-one, and i dont know anybody who knits. whats a good way of teaching myself? sometimes i look up stuff online and it seems so overwhelmingly complicated! i know how to do a knit stitch and purl stitch, and i did this one project from a knitting DVD, made a plain square thing using increasing and decreasing.
is it expert-level stuff to do designs in different colors with knitting?
if i wanted to make a sweater, do you stitch the whole thing together, or do you make the sleeves seperate and sew on? SO MANY QUESTIONS! Please post any good resources for beginners! Thanks!
I taught myself how to knit from an old book, and I know that many other people did the same thing. Of course, I did this in the mid 60s, so there WAS no YouTube.
Your local library should have several books and possibly videos on how to knit, and projects. If you want to learn one-on-one, you might do an internet search to see if you have an active knitting guild in your area.
I’d say that knitting with more than one color is at least intermediate level, depending on the pattern.
For a sweater, all the patterns I’ve seen require knitting the individual pieces and then sewing them together. Back, front (or left front and right front), and sleeves. I think that a sweater might be a bit too ambitious for a beginning knitter, though.
I advise you to go to the library and look at what they have. Used book stores also frequently have a lot of craft books, and they’re much cheaper than buying new. And I’ve had pretty good success by just doing an internet search using something like “knitting pattern sweater”, for instance.
Try to get nice needles, and at least a decent grade of yarn. The very cheapest yarns are impossible to work with, and will cause you to think that you are a bad knitter, when the problem is actually the yarn.
