Techniques needed to knit a christmas stocking?

I’m teaching myself to knit. I can cast on, knit stitch, purl, and stockinette and bind off. What other techiniques will i need to knit a christmas stocking. 10 points to best answer. thank you

Christmas stockings are knit as seamed socks. So you need the skills to knit socks as well as the finishing skills to do the seam.

For socks:
decreasing
picking up stitches
short rows of some sort

If you want something more than a solid or striped stocking, you’ll also need to be able to read a chart and to some color work. I’d start with the solid or striped stocking first just to keep the new things you need to learn to a manageable level.

Here’s about the easiest stocking pattern I could find: http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/kctq-stocking.html?noImages=0
