Knitting Stitches Instructions

knitting stitches instructions
Help with these knitting instructions?

I am part way through knitting a cardigan and do not really understand these instructions.

They say: “On next RS row, knit across putting sleeve stitches on stitch holders. Cast on 12 stitches, placing marker after casting on 6 to mark center side. Purl 1 row.”

I have designated stitches for the left front, left sleeve, back, right sleeve, and right front of the cardigan. I know what a place marker is and how to use them, and I know that “RS” is right side. I am confused about where I cast these stitches on at. The cardigan is symmetrical and it doesn’t make sense to cast them on at the beginning of the row and add 12 stitches to only one front side. Where would I cast them on at?

You will work across to the stitches for the sleeve, the working yarn will be coming from the right needle. Put the sleeve stitches on your holder (personally, I single crochet them off with a piece of waste yarn–I hate working with metal holders in the work and a strand of waste yarn doesn’t hold the stitches open), now turn the work as if you were going to work back (trust me here). Insert the now right hand needle into the first stitch on the now left hand needle, wrap the yarn and pull a stitch through. Give this stitch a half twist clockwise and slip it onto the left needle, leaving the right needle in the stitch. Wrap another stitch and pull it through, twist clockwise and slip it on the left needle. Continue doing this until all 12 new stitches are on the left needle, placing a marker between the 6th and 7th stitches, after you are ready to put the 7th stitch on the needle. Turn the work again and now knit the next stitch on the body going in the original direction. What you are doing is casting on over the sleeve opening eventually you will most likely pick up stitches here to knit your sleeve with or the armhole edging. This is known as knitting on and also works as a good method to cast on with.
