Help with mary jane booties pattern?

I’m stuck on row 20. I’ve knit 9, bind off 21, and knit remaining 9. Where it says put first set of 9 stitches on holder I’m confused. Which is the first set of 9? If I hold my work by the bottom of the needle and the tip is facing to the left there is 9 at the bottom of needle and then 9 where the tip is. This is the part with the yarn on it. Can I just leave the 9 stitches at the bottom on the needle instead of putting them on a holder? I am so confused
Yes, you could leave the first nine stitches (the ones at the bottom) on the needle, but it will start to get awkward. If you don’t have a holder, a big safety pin works well. Or a hook style cable needle. Either way, you’ll be working with the group that your yarn connects to, and leaving the other group for later.
