what is the best way to wash a new knitted shawl and pin it out?
Assuming the shawl is made from wool:
Fill sink or basin with cool water, add wool wash or hair shampoo, gently lower shawl into water. Do not rub or agitate as wool will felt (shrink and mat together). Gently squeeze and release all areas of shawl under water, then lift from water without allowing shawl to stretch from its own weight. Fill basin with clean water and rinse with the same technique as for washing. Remove from water and lay flat on a large bath towel, roll up towel and squeeze gently to remove excess water. Unroll towel.
Lay a dry towel, larger than the shawl, out on a flat surface. Lay the shawl out on the towel, adjust the shape until it is even all around, and then with rust proof pins fasten it to the towel at regular intervals. Allow to dry away from direct sunlight and curious cats.
