I want to learn to knit. What are some good first-timer tutorials?
I would like to knit a scarf or two as Christmas gifts for my family. I have googled up a storm and all the tutorials and articles I’m getting are confusing for me, or not detailed enough. I have NEVER knitted a thing in my LIFE at all, so I need some tutorials that are very, very basic. Thank you for your help!

There are a bunch of videos on YouTube, but it’s hit or miss whether they’ll show you the techniques correctly or get you into bad habits. Some are great; some are terrible.
You might also consider getting a learn-to-knit book from your craft store for $10-$15. Melissa Leapman just did the reissue of “I Can’t Believe I’m Knitting” which has a companion DVD that can be purchased separately. Melissa is a GODDESS among knitting instructors. I took her Celtic Cables class a couple of years ago and it was the best knitting class I ever had. She just explains things so clearly and anticipates every possible way things can go wrong so she can coach you how to avoid the pitfalls. I haven’t taken a good look at the new booklet yet, but if she’s involved I have to believe it’s good (and the old version wasn’t bad either).
Also check at your local public library. They’re sure to have some beginner knitting books. The key to finding a good one is to look at the illustrations. They should proceed in small steps and either be very clear photographs where you can see exactly where the yarn and needles are in relation to each other, or clear line drawings (I tend to prefer the line drawing illustrations because I think they tend to be clearer).
