What can I do with my thread bare baby blanket?
I still sleep with my baby blanket, its 23 years old and is falling apart. The edgest are huge holes and the middle is almost see through and starting to get holes. I want to find a way to preserve it a little. I was thinking I could sew it to another piece of fabric and make a pillow or teddy bear out of it but I dont think it could hold the thread, would sewing it by machine or hand be better? I also though about cutting it into a long strip and knitting it into a smaller rattie blanket but I know know how long that would last.
Any other suggestions? Maybe I should just keep it the way it is and let it live out its life.
So many possibilities! I agree that ironing it to an interfacing is a good idea, it will stop the deterioration and help bulk up the fabric so you can do something with it.
If you are dead set to continue to sleep with it, if you strip into 3/4 in strips it should knit up great. You might still consider interfacing it with a water soluble interface until you are done knitting but it should hold up for a very long time once you have it completed.
Just don’t be too disappointed when your blankie turns in to a coaster which you can then use as a center medallion for a knitted blanket or such.
