Earflap Hat Knitting Pattern

What does it mean to “work across” when knitting?

I have come across this term for the first time while knitting a hat with earflaps. The earflaps are completed and now I am starting the body of the hat on circular needles. The pattern asks me to cast on 22 stitches and then “work across” the 42 stitches of one of my ear flaps.

I understand what needs to be done (namely hooking the earflap to the body of the hat), but the how is confusing. Currently each earflap has been knitted on a different ball of yarn and I started the body of the hat on a third. The exact instructions are as follows:

“With circular needle, cast on 22sts (for back), work across 42 sts of 1st ear flap, CO 46 sts (for front), work across 42 sts of 2nd ear flap.”

Thanks so much.

‘Work across’ simply means to knit (or purl, or whatever the pattern has told you to so) all the way across. So, presuming you’re doing a knit stitch, you’ll cast on the 22 new stitches and then just keep going, knitting all the way across the earflap, to the next place where you cast on 22 more new stitches and then knit all the way across the other earflap until you get back to the first batch of 22 stitches you cast on.. With circular needles, you just keep knitting and never have to purl, except for making designs of course. They’re fun. So, yes, basically, ‘work across’ just means keep going. Unless they’re all different colors, you’ll switch from working with 3 balls of yarn to working only with one. If they are all different colors, tie a knot where they come together the first time, and then twist one yarn around the other whenever you need to change colors.
