A Bunch of Knitting a Scarf Questions…?
I am knitting a cable scarf right now. It is 5 inches wide and going to be 65 inches or maybe longer. There are some questions I want to clear up before I finish it.
1. I am using Red Hearts yarn and it isn’t very soft. How do I wash it with to make it softer? I heard somewhere that you should add some hair conditioner to soften it. I am not sure that would work.
2. I might add tassels. Do I include the length of the tassels to the total 65 inches or finish knitting the 65 inches then add the tassels…
3. What type of affordable not cashmere (too expensive for my budget) yarn should I use in the future to avoid that roughness feeling that I have now…?
Thanks in advance!
1. I’m not sure about how you would make Red Heart yarn softer. I’ve noticed that about their Super Saver yarn too. Some colors of that yarn can be softer than others. Your best bet would be to talk to someone who works at a craft store or someone you know who has a lot of experience with yarn. They might know–or you can do some trial and error. Try washing it and see what happens.
2. I think in this case, you should go by how long you really want the scarf to be. I don’t knit, but I do crochet and when I make scarves, I always put it around me (sort of like trying it on) and decide how long I want the body of it to be and from there I go about deciding whether or not to put fringe on it. You can make the fringe as long as you want too. It all depends on how tall the person that’s going to be using it is. If you are following a pattern, it should say in the size if it is counting the fringe or not. If it doesn’t say, it’s a good bet that it’s not counting the fringe.
3. Your best bet on yarn is to go to the store and just feel the types of yarn they have to sell. Depending on where you bought it, some craft stores have coupons in their ads you can use. Joann’s and Michael’s (as well as Hobby Lobby and some other stores) have 40% off any one items coupons in their ads (which usually come in the Sunday paper). With Joann’s, you can also sign up to get coupons by mail and by email–best of all they take the coupons from the ad, the mail, the email AND a Michael’s ad coupon all in the same transaction. (At least, the Joann’s by me does that. It might be different for each store.) If you can use those, it saves a lot of money on yarn and it really adds up. I hardly ever pay full price for yarn because of those blessed coupons.
I like to use Caron Simply Soft yarns and Caron One Pound yarn. They are only a little more expensive than the Red Heart Super Saver, but A LOT softer. The Lion Brand yarns are more expensive and even Red Heart has some types of yarn that would be more. But, like I said, just go to the store and feel the yarn. That will tell you what feel you like.
